In sulphuric acid chromate ions react with diphenylcarbazide to form a red-violet dye. (Reaction principle analogous to APHA 3500-Cr D & DIN EN ISO 18412)

Chromium compounds can be present in industrial waste waters in trivalent form [chromium(III) ions] and in hexavalent form (chromate and dichromate ions). In order to determine the total chromium all other valencies must be oxidised to chromium(VI).
